Geo can help you to learn a foreign language by providing a tailor-made course in any language between 1 to 30 hours per week. Lessons can be carried out at your premises or ours, in any language, including English.
Is it like being back at school?
Don't worry - it's not how you remember it. We're not going to shout at you or discipline you (unless that's really your kind of thing).
Geo's tutors are selected for their:
Academic and business knowledge |
Passion for their language and culture |
Experience and consistently good feedback |
We ask our tutors to work with our students to make the lessons as compelling, relevant and as much fun as possible. We'll tailor the course
to your requirements - so if you have specific vocabulary
you need to learn, we can help. If you need to prepare
a presentation in your chosen language, your tutor
can become your coach and help you prepare the right
presentation for your target language market.
Lessons are flexible and at days and times to suit you - though we do make some recommendations as to minimum requirements...you aren't going to get much out of a 45 minute lesson with a tea break in the middle.
Is it expensive?
For one-to-one tuition it's certainly more than an adult education course - however you need to balance that against these facts:
You get a tailor-made course |
You get the possibility of learning much more quickly |
You get much more flexible lessons which can be arranged at your premises or ours |
If you have a group for tuition
the price per head will drop rapidly and make it
much more affordable - and you still get a tailor-made
course.
What's the best use of my time and money
when learning a language?
It really depends on your priorities. If
you have plenty of time to learn and no fixed goals
then don't come to us. It'd be better to join an
adult education course (or similar). You can ask
us to recommend one. Once you've taken it as far
as you can, come and talk to us.
If you need to achieve a certain language level
in a certain time or only have a few hours per week
when you can cram it in - then you need our help.
How fast can I learn?
Tricky. There are guidelines, but it depends
on a variety of factors such as the language being
learnt, previous experience of language learning,
how much work you put in outside the lessons etc.
We'll come and assess you as part of the service
and give you an objective idea of how long it'll
take you to get to the level you need and what it'll
cost to get you there.
We did this as a group at my company once...everyone
stopped going.
Please bear in mind that the optimum group
size is about 6 people. More than 6 people and the
group becomes less effective: students don't get
enough individual attention or practice, so they
can become demotivated. Attendance starts to drop
and the whole thing becomes a bit of a waste of
money. Yes - you can try to motivate people to attend
through a variety of means (beating them with one
form of stick or another) but it doesn't remove
the fact that a large group will make it difficult
for students to learn anything - languages are a
practical skill and require contact time in the
classroom. In our experience it's best to create
an enjoyable lesson format which motivated students
want to attend - a "no-excuses" culture.
What is culture training?
Where have you been? Mars? Really? What's
their attitude to teamwork or corruption? Is it
polite to give gifts? Seriously - culture training
is important. It's useful for doing business abroad
and for working in multicultural environments and
can make the difference between success and failure
in many situations. The British Army give all troops
culture training and many business and government
organisations now have programmes in place to educate
their employees as part of an international communications
plan. The US government has even launched a website
to make its citizens a bit more aware of the differences
to expect outside its borders... see www.worldcitizensguide.org
OK. But what is it, really?
At its simplest cultural training is learning
how not to cause offence when dealing with different
cultures, but it can be so much more. Courses can
vary - everyone will have different needs. Some
examples of courses are:
Doing business in Japan |
Working in a multicultural team: Values
and what to be aware of |
How to negotiate the Afghan way |
Using English in an international environment |
Country briefings - how to get on in society |
If you can explain your situation to us we can throw ideas at you to fire your imagination and start to develop a tailor-made course.
